History · Dow's Lake area
Why is it called Dow's Lake?
Short answer
The lake is named after Abram Dow, an American-born settler who owned land in the area in 1816. Before the Rideau Canal was built, the area was known as Dow's Great Swamp.
As of · Updated
The lake was created when an earthen dam was built along the north shore to flood the area for the canal. The north part of Queen Elizabeth Driveway now sits on the dam.
