History · Dow's Lake area
How has the Dow's Lake area changed since 1900?
Short answer
Until 1928, the parkland and part of the residential area east of the lake were rail-served lumber piling yards, and the area north of Carling Avenue was mostly industrial. HMCS Carleton's reserve barracks beside the Dows Lake Pavilion opened in 1943.
As of · Updated
A rail tunnel under the Rideau Canal at the lake's southwest corner was completed on August 5, 1967, replacing a swing-bridge crossing. It is now used only by O-Train Line 2.
